Crabbiest Day...Ever

My child has been the crabbiest little turd ever today. Lots of crying and whining. This was one quiet moment as I had applied some of the baby orajel to his gums. No ibuprofen worked, no acetaminophen worked, and he napped a little less than one hour total today. Considering I was up all night listening to Garrett's dad snoring, today has been a lackluster return from the holiday fun.

PS: Super congrats to Aunt Chelle...the new mommy-to-be!

Discovery of the tongue!

Young Garrett has discovered that he has a tongue and he likes to stick it out constantly! I think he likes to nibble on his tongue with his new teeth. It's so cute as he curls his little tongue and sticks it out like a little lizard. I stick my tongue out at him, but I don't think he gets it. He just tries to grab it. So, now, I just try to grab his tongue when it's hanging out.

And We're on Tooth Number 2!

Wow! It's like the lightning round for tooth sprouting in our house! Garrett cut his second tooth the day after he he cut his first! He's been a real joy lately. : ) I have no pictures to post with this update as he is really cranky and not taking pictures well.

I hope everyone is having a happy holiday season! I'll be posting new pictures soon of Garrett and our Christmas tree!

First Tooth! and Six month stats

Garrett had his six month check up today and he is doing great! He is in the 50th percentile for height, weight, and noggin roundness. Here are his stats:

Height: 26.25 inches
Weight: 18 lbs even

He was so wiggly and squirmy in my arms through the visit that his doctor was laughing at the impending future of this child needing to run around once he becomes mobile. While I am excited at the prospect of Garrett growing, I cower in anticipation of the chasing that will ensue.

More good news: Garrett has his first tooth! I found it last night and I could just barely feel the little ridges on the sharp edge. Today, I can feel it a little easier. I'll be sure to post a picture when it's visible.

Also, Garrett got his shots again today and he was such a trooper! He cried for about three seconds, then stopped altogether and even smiled at the nurse. She was amazed that he recovered so quickly. I was proud of him and his ability to rally so effectively.

On the less-than-good-news front: Garrett's goopy eye is a combination of blocked tear duct (common) that is infected. Poor guy. So he has to be on a course of antibiotics now to clear the infection. Also, doc said that his tear duct is blocked and most likely won't unblock itself. She said to wait until 8 months, then go see the eye specialist who can tell us if his eye will need a very easy, minor surgery to unplug it.

Surgery. Harumpf!

Thanksgiving with family and friends...

Garrett was such a sweet boy through all of our Thanksgiving parties. We started out at Cal's aunt's house where we had a great time getting to know all the new relatives. He was so happy and content all day, it was hard to believe there was a baby in the house!

This is our first real picture as a family! I love this one because everyone is looking at the camera!

This is Garrett having a "digestive experience". It was even funnier in real life.

Having dinner with Grandma!

Getting to know Aunt Miriam! Garrett liked to pull her curly hair. We met up with my friend Miriam on Friday after Thanksgiving. She had the opportunity to meet the little guy she saw me poking in my belly during our last semester of classes together. She was sure to let Garrett know that she was on his side the whole time. : )

"Great to have seen you, Miriam! I hope you had a safe drive back to Texas!"

Veggies, eyes, cribs...

Good advice

So, Garrett has a goopy eye problem and whenever we get back from a car trip where he has fallen asleep, his left eye is always gooped shut. Here is what that typically looks like. I think it's pretty cute in this instance. I'm such a mean mom.

Garrett has enjoyed playing in his crib recently. It's new and exciting now that he can play sitting up. Below you'll see a video of him, too.

Halloween!

The boys were not terribly fond of their costumes!

But they still looked cute!

Continuing Barfiness

Baby loves to eat prunes! The green beans weren't such a success.

Much cleaner.

Lately, Garrett is still not doing so well. He is barfing all over the place! His little face makes grimmaces when he's barfing and I wish I could help him feel better! I've got another call in to our doctor hoping to find out what is going on. Also our lactation consultant is in the fun just to make sure we are covering all the bases. Oy.

A little QT with Fam and Friends

This week, Garrett got sick early on and then shaped up quickly. We were able to get down to Madison for the last two days of our four day trip and had an opportunity to see some friends. Check out the cuteness...

Holding hands with Aunt Cory...

Enjoying Qdoba with Uncle Larry.

When we got home, we had Garrett's cousin Braydon and his mom Sarah come stay with us. We went to the pumpkin patch and took some wicked cute pictures of the boys. They are getting so big.

Garrett likes the feel of the pumpkins

The two boys sharing Garrett's jungle gym. It was a tight squeeze!

Garrett: "Who IS this guy?"

Braydon: I don't know who he is, but he's getting smacked in the face! Repeatedly!

Super Happy Garrett

My little guy is so easily amused. This 60 second clip shows him laughing at me. And while it looks like I am rocking his exersaucer, in fact I am not. It's got a curved bottom and he is just that excited that he rocks it all over the place! Enjoy!

Halloween Costume

Here is the adorable costume I picked up for Garrett and it was too small! I was able to wedge him into it for the picture, but he cried when he tried to move and couldn't do that so well. I think he looks so cute as a pea pod, and I wish I could find a bigger size! Alas, Target only sells this costume in this size. Sigh... However, at a local resale shop, there is a little sunflower costume for sale. We'll see how that one works out...

Remember when he used to sleep through the night?

Yeah, that isn't happening anymore. : ( Apparently, he is uber hungry and he keeps waking up to eat about three times each night. Doc says that once he starts eating cereal and other solids more regularly, we'll probably see those 10-12 hour stretches of sleep returning. In the meantime,...*drifting off to sleep*

Holy crap I'm tired.

Actually, last night, I packed him full of food each time he woke up and he ended up waking only twice instead of three times. I have the hugest, hungriest baby ever.

Back to Sleeping through the night!

Help! Morty the Moose is getting me!

Well, I am happy to announce that Garrett has gone from waking up three times each night (10:30pm, 1:45am, and 4am) back to sleeping all through the night! Last night, he went to bed around 8pm and woke up this morning around 7:30am. It took a little bit of work, but we managed to get him back on track.

I was reading one of my baby development books last night and it said that to try to help baby learn to sleep through the night, you have to use a series of progressive waiting techniques. Up to this point, we had been waiting for 5 minutes from the time he started crying, til the time I went in to feed him. Well, I decided to wait for 10 minutes. Happily, he stopped crying abruptly at the 9 minute mark. Then, he slept quietly all through the night until 7:30 in the morning. Happy mommy.

I LOVE naked time! There's nothing like the feeling of my butt cheeks flappin' in the wind!

This morning was Garrett's four month appointment for a well check and shots. He is currently 16 pounds even and 25.5 inches long. Our doctor talked to us about starting cereal and we're looking forward to making it part of our daily routine. He has been a little frustrated with our attempts at cereal last week, but the doc said we should try to feed him when he isn't super hungry and see if that works better. I'm sure we'll have some pictures of that adventure as it progresses.

This video was taken of Garrett at his Grandma and Grandpa's house this weekend. Garrett had his first real interaction with their golden retriever, Walker, and had lots to say about it!

New pictures

Last night, I was reviewing what video we have captured of Baby G since he was born. As it turns out, not so much! Apparently, we haven't taped him doing anything since end of June, which would have made him about a month old. Thankfully, we have been taking lots of pictures. Here are some recent goodies.

Yummy, tasty fist.

Going shopping on a day when Garrett was in an especially good mood. All the people we saw in the store were enamored with what a sweet baby he is (WAS).

Garrett likes to spend naked time on the floor everyday. Today, Dad got to be part of it.

Sleeping Regression

Little Garrett has been going down to sleep so easily for a long time. About a month or so. However, just recently, he has been crying and crying when it's time to go down for sleep. He used to suck his thumb to calm himself down and go to sleep, but he's not doing that anymore. It's weird.

So now, we are back to timing him when we put him down. I go in after 3 minutes, then 5 minutes, then he's usually asleep. But this pattern seems to be getting worse instead of better. He woke up to eat around 11pm last night and refused to go back to sleep when he was done. Usually, he would go back down sucking his thumb and sleep so easily.

I wonder if he's going through a growth spurt or some other weird thing that is keeping him uncomfortable. But why stopping the thumb sucking? You know, I can handle the crying, it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. However, I just feel sorry for my little guy who seems to be suffering.

I LOVE my new stripey socks!

Last week we procured some funky new striped socks that Garrett appears to love. When I put the blue stripes on him, he couldn't stop staring at his feet and grabbing at those socks! I think they look pretty darn cute on him.

Oatmeal Bath for Baby's Skin

Little G's problem with eczema persists and we gave him an oatmeal bath tonight to help him deal with the itching and discomfort. He was pretty chill in the water and sat just like this the entire time. That thumb didn't leave his mouth and he just hung out till we took him to his room for lotioning. That's when the sh!t really hit the fan. This kid really hates being lotioned up. Maybe that's why we're dealing with eczema now...Mom shirked her lotioning responsibilities when Garrett screamed through it one too many times.

Mom needs a damn job.

Hey, Hazelden. I'm right here for ya, baby. All you gotta do is call.

9/3/08: HAZELDEN UPDATE: THEY ARE CURRENTLY ON A HIRING FREEZE AND I MAY OR MAY NOT RECEIVE A CALL TO INTERVIEW WHEN THE HIRING FREEZE IS "THAWED".
GREAT. AT LEAST I KNOW THEY'RE FAILURE TO CALL ME WASN'T ENTIRELY MY FAULT.

A Picture with Mom

He really was happier than he looks when we took this picture. We had one where he was smiling really big, but it was super blurry and made me look like I had werewolf fangs. So, we won't post that one.

Here are some other pictures I've taken of Garrett recently that are kind of fun. Enjoy:

Someone finally took a pacifier. It was a pacifier that was supposedly four months too big for him. Look how huge it is on his face! Too bad it was only for a week...

We were playing on the floor of his room. He was looking at the baby in the picture on the side of that box. I left to go to the bathroom, when I came back, he was asleep. I guess that baby wasn't as exciting as he thought.

This is what I typically see when I go in to get him in the mornings. Aw.

Someone got all tuckered out from his walk. Did I mention he was just in the stroller?

Thanks Grandma and Grandpa Fonstad for the great toy that makes all the loud noises!
